Trekking to Makalu Base Camp (8468 m)

from
2,350.00

DatesNovember 2026 18 days

The Makalu Base Camp Trek (4870m) is considered one of the most challenging and exciting itineraries in the eastern region of Nepal, an ideal opportunity for adventure enthusiasts to explore unspoilt areas of the Himalayas and observe the unique culture and lifestyle of the people still living isolated at the highest altitudes. Although it is not so far from Everest, the Makalu region has not yet been discovered by mass tourism and is therefore little frequented by hikers, which means that the trails are still quiet, uncrowded and nature still intact. The Barun Arun valley is home to more than 650 types of birds and over 800 varieties of butterflies as well as a refuge for a rare and endangered species such as the Panda. With this trip we will enter a still authentic Nepal, that of the Makalu-Barun Park, discovering all the landscapes that characterise the true heart of this land: rhododendron forests, Himalayan pine forests, glacial lakes, Sherpa villages that seem to belong to the past. As we ascend in altitude, the views will change constantly, first along the spectacular ridge that takes us over several passes over 4000 metres, and then along the Barun Valley, a jewel set between snow-capped peaks and rocky walls furrowed by a myriad of waterfalls, a nature that will not fail to thrill us every day. The Makalu Barun National Park will offer us the unforgettable views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, the Chamlang, Peak 3, Peak 5, Yaupa Himal, Everest, Kanchenjunga and, isolated and majestic, Makalu itself (8463m), first climbed in 1955 by Lionel Terray, (author of "The Conquerors of the Useless") and Jean Couzy.

The history of the Makalu regionNepal's history is lost in time, ever since the first migrations led tribes to move into and settle in these remote valleys. Of these, the most prominent is surely that of the Sherpas, a people who gave themselves this name to distinguish themselves from the other Nepalese populations from Tibet (shar-pa means men from the east). Their natural adaptation to altitude and the fact that they live at the foot of the great Himalayan peaks have meant that they have been identified as the porters par excellence. A unique people in the world characterised not only by their impressive physical gifts, but also by a particularly generous and hospitable culture, for them it is not material wealth that counts, but the ability to empathise with their neighbour and respect for human dignity.

GENERAL TREKKING NOTES
The trek is designed to enjoy the walk, does not involve any mountaineering difficulties and does not require any previous high mountain experience. Walking along trails and sleeping in simple, spartan hotels is not something you do every day, but these are situations that everyone can certainly face and live with serenity. A good physical condition is important, good training is necessary, which can easily be obtained by doing articulated hikes, ascents and descents, with a 5 kg rucksack on our shoulders, this will help us to have the necessary preparation to face this experience. With the right equipment, a spirit of adaptation and cooperation, respect and tolerance for the group, the rest will follow: it will be the pleasure of observing spectacular landscapes at our own pace, exploring nature, savouring the silence and solitude of these remote areas that will fill our days. The hours of the daily stages indicated are calculated on an average pace, taking into account stops for photography, and breaks for lunch and tea that will be determined with the guide. The wake-up time is usually around 6:00/6:30, and the porters' luggage must be ready before breakfast so that they can organise the transport. In the morning we walk for 3-4 hours on average and after lunch for 2-3 hours, clearly depending on the length of the stage. Access to the main luggage is guaranteed at the end of the day, so you should not put anything in it that you might need during the day.
Once the group is formed and before departure, an information meeting with the guide is scheduled to provide more details and answer any questions. A medical certificate is required to be able to carry out the trek. There will also be 2 MANDATORY outings in a place to be determined, in any case on the mountains closest to us, in order to get to know each other and allow the guide to assess the participants' level of preparation. People who do not turn up for at least one outing will not be accepted.
