WHAT IS AN MOUNTAIN GUIDE
The role of Mountain Guide as defined by law (2 January 1989, n.°6) is the only professional who can operate in the mountains undertaking the following:
- guiding you on excursions and ascents both on rock and ice or while canyoning
- guiding you on ski mountaineering and skiing ascents
- instruct in the various techniques of mountaineering, ski mountaineering and Rope Access
The title of Mountain Guide – Mountaineering Expert represents the pinnacle of training and professional development. This figure is framed in the intellectual professions. This means that to exercise this profession one must be enrolled in a registertherefore having successfully the required training, be enrolled in a Regional College and, very importantly, having taken out civil liability insurance that protects the professional and his clients. The Mountain Guide-Mountaineering Master is part of the U.I.A.G.M/IFMGA (International Union of Mountain Guide Associations).

WHAT ARE HIKING GUIDES
Hiking guides (or Guide Ambientali Escursionistiche) hold a separate and distinct qualification allowing them to professionally guide clients on hikes and is regulated by the regional law LR n°42/2000. The guides are members of the A.I.G.A.E. (Italian Association of Environmental Excursion Guides).
Accompanied by the guides you will explore the ancient paths that trace their way through this magical environment, see breath-taking views of the coastline to the west, unique to the Apuan Alps, where the western horizon stretches over the sea from Livorno, through Versilia and north to the Cinque Terre. You will discover the dramatic beauty of the marble quarries, the prehistoric caves, the landscapes and seep up the extraordinary and at times complex history of these very beautiful mountains.
The hikes are suitable for novices and experts alike and groups are small. Excursions can either be booked on request or selected from one of the predetermined programmed dates, from May to September. All dates are subject to variation due to bad weather.
